Olympic Selection Committee Regrets Not Adding Caitlin Clark?
If the Olympic committee had to reselect the United States women's Olympic team, Caitlin Clark would be playing in Paris right now...most likely.
While the word "regret" may be a little bit strong but there were some interesting quotes from Dawn Staley, who is a member of the committee that selected the players to be on Team USA.
Regretful might not be exactly how the committee feels, as the United States women did just beat Belgium 87-74 in their second game and have clinched a spot in the quarterfinals. The team currently has a 2-0 record and is the heavy favorite to win the Gold Medal. The team is winning and playing at a high level and that's all that matters. There's not much more you can ask from the team.
Whether Caitlin should or should not have made the team has been debated since it was announced she would not make the trip to Paris. I think most Americans would would argue that she should've been on the team. She didn't need to be a starter necessarily, but she deserved a spot on the roster with how she played in her first half of the WNBA season. The viewing interest by the rest of the world skyrockets with Caitlin on the team and there's no doubt not adding her to the team is costing viewership.
I'm sure Caitlin wishes she was in Paris, playing for Team USA but it looks like she's also having a great time on her first long break in almost a year. She was just on stage at a concert in Indianapolis!
Dawn Staley Interview
Dawn Staley is the Head Coach of the South Carolina Women's Basketball team and she is also a member of the Olympic selection committee for the women's basketball team. She was interviewed by NBC and spoke on Caitlin Clark likely being a member of the team if they reselected the players today.
Caitlin is an incredible 3-point shooter as everyone is well aware of but she's likely this team's best passer if she was on the roster today.
Even though Caitlin should've been selected, her time will come. In 4 years, she'll likely be the first player selected to join the team. It's a bummer for fans who don't get to watch her in the 2024 Olympics but I bet the Indiana Fever are secretly ecstatic that Caitlin has time off to rest and recover for the second half of their season.
In your opinion, did the committee drop the ball here? *No pun intended*
