Three people are dead and two others injured after a two-vehicle accident in western Iowa.

A 1999 Ford F-350 pickup and a 2001 Toyota Camry collided head-on on Highway 71 in Cass County Friday afternoon (7/14) at approximately 12:50 p.m. The accident happened near the intersection of Troublesome Creek Road (map showing accident site is below)

43-year-old Michael Warnaca of Exira, Iowa was driving the F-350 northbound on Highway 71 when it crossed the center line, colliding with the southbound Camry being driven by 46-year-old Erick Kerkman of North Liberty, Iowa. After the crash, Warnaca's F-350 rolled onto its passenger side on the west shoulder while Kerkman's car ended up in the west ditch. Both men were killed in the accident.

Additionally, a 15-year-old female passenger in Kerkman's vehicle was killed and a 12-year-old male passenger was injured. Their names have not been released, but the Iowa State Patrol says both are from North Liberty. The injured male was taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center by Cass County EMS.

A 10-year-old male from Exira, who was riding with Warnaca, was also injured. He was transported to the Cass County Medical Center.
