Kirkwood Announces 4 Day Work Week to Battle Inflation
It took a worldwide pandemic to see much of the workforce stay home and get the job done from their house. Now, a down economy and high gas prices could lead to something many thought would be impossible in this country. The adoption of a four-day workweek.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Kirkwood Community College is rolling out a pilot program this summer that will close campus offices on Fridays. A spokesman for the school says that the changes are "absolutely inflation-related". By reducing the workweek down to four days, the college would reduce the number of days that employees would need to drive to the school. The average price for gas in Iowa sits at $3.86. A year ago it was at $2.87.
Kirkwood's four-day workweek will affect office employees and will not affect courses or student schedules, according to the Gazette. Also excluded from the new summer schedule are the facilities department and The Hotel at Kirkwood Center. Kirkwood President Lori Sundberg said that it is important for the school to provide in-person experiences for students, according to the Gazette. But the amended summer hours are one way Kirkwood can save employees and the school money.
