An accident late Monday morning at a Marion Dairy Queen has claimed the life of an Alburnett man.

The Marion Police Department says Curtis Schantz was in the drive-thru of the Dairy Queen at 1101 Eagleview Drive in Marion when his 1996 F Series Super Duty truck broke down. He opened the hood of the truck to try to fix the problem when authorities believe the truck rolled forward, running over him. Schantz suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead after being rushed to an area hospital.

Schantz, 74, of Alburnett had served on the Alburnett Fire Department for more than three decades, according to a post on the department's Facebook page.

This was the second freak accident involving vehicles in just over 24 hours in the metro area.

Sunday morning just after 9:30, a man and a woman were pinned under a vehicle in the Butterly Cafe parking lot at 1616 1st Ave. NE in Cedar Rapids. In that instance, a truck backed over the two pedestrians. A release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department said emergency crews were able to raise the vehicle to free them. They were both taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
