March 21, 2020, was the day the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Linn County. More than four months later, nearly 2,000 Linn County residents have tested positive for the virus.

Wednesday, the Gazette reported 39 new cases in Linn County. That was the day's second-highest total in the state behind Polk County which reported 74 new cases. There has now been a total of 1,914 confirmed cases of the virus in Linn County. with a total of 87 deaths, or 4.5 percent of total cases. Thankfully, there have been no coronavirus-related deaths in the county since July 16. Of the 87 deaths related to the virus in Linn County, nearly all of them are from the Cedar Rapids metro.

A tool on the Linn County Public Health website shows the most deaths in Linn County have been in southwest Cedar Rapids. That portion of southwest Cedar Rapids has had 36 people die from the virus, nearly double the total of any other zip code in the county.

  • 52402 (Northeast Cedar Rapids): 19
  • 52403 (Southeast Cedar Rapids): 13
  • 52302 (Marion): 11
  • 52405 (Northwest Cedar Rapids): 3
  • 52401 (Downtown Cedar Rapids): 2
  • 52233 (Hiawatha): One
  • 52228 (Fairfax): One
  • 52314 (Mount Vernon): One

Eleven percent of people who have tested positive for COVID-19, or 215, have been hospitalized. Eight people were hospitalized as of last night, with 262 active cases in the county.
