Iowa's 3rd oldest city is home to many historic houses, some of which were built by the men behind what we know today as Von Maur department store. One of them is for sale.

Just a couple of blocks from the Mississippi River in Davenport, just up the hill, sits a home that was designed in 1902 for Roland Harned. Harned was one of the men there when it all began for Von Maur.

According to Von Maur, it was in 1887 that C.J. von Maur opened the Boston Store in Davenport. His partners were Roland Harned and Edward Pursel. In this long-ago photo, you can see that Harned/von Maur have their names near the top of the building that would house a Von Maur store until the 1980s.

*Note, the Von Maur website indicates the von Maur family name had a small "v" at the time.

In 1928, the store became Petersen, Harned & von Maur. In 1937, von Maur's family took full ownership of the store. At some point the small "v" became a capital one, but "Petersen, Harned Von Maur" would remain the name on stores until 1989 when it became just "Von Maur".  It is still based in Davenport, Iowa. More on the history of Von Maur is in a video at the bottom of this story.

Seven years before the first von Maur store would open, Charles J. von Maur built the home below at 1800 East River Drive in Davenport. The more than 6,700 square foot home still stands today, in its 142nd year. It was built in 1880.

Just two-tenths of a mile from the home of his partner, von Maur, Roland Harned built his own house. It was designed in 1902, but not actually built until 1906.

Also a huge home, the Harned house is more than 6,000 square feet. According to the real estate listing, it has everything you can think of. There are five very spacious bedrooms, all on the second floor. There's a half-bath on the main floor, with four full baths upstairs. Stained glass windows, three wood-burning fireplaces, a three seasons porch, and more make this historic home a thing of beauty.

Located at 830 Mississippi Avenue in Davenport, it's listed at $649,900. Listing agents are Sara DeWulf and Brad Gibson of Mel Foster Co. Take a look around in the photos below.
