Recreational boaters looking forward to being on the Mississippi River soon, are being warned to avoid a popular Northeast Iowa boat ramp this Memorial Day holiday.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging area boaters to use extra caution at the Lansing Village Creek boat access at Lansing. This is due to a river level that is lower than what was predicted and is continuing to drop, into next week.

The DNR notes that boats could possibly run aground at the mouth of Lansing Village Creek which empties into the Mississippi. It will also be risky to operate your boat down the channel that goes under the Lansing bridge.

Boaters on the Mississippi are encouraged to use other area ramps, including the one located along New Albin Army Road, north of Lansing, and the boat access at Heytman's Landing, south of Lansing.

There are also many ramps on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi, including the Big Slough and Winneshiek Slough Landings, which are directly across the Lansing bridge. Or you can put your vessel in, at one of several ramps at Blackhawk Park.

Memorial Day is less than 2 weeks away, and with the threat of the pandemic beginning to fade, area waterways, as well as roads and highways, are expected to be busy.

Law enforcement agencies, including the State Patrol, county sheriff's offices, and police departments, will be conducting another "Click it or Ticket" seat belt enforcement program from May 24 through June 6th. During the unofficial start of summer, law enforcement agencies will be watching for seat belt usage, impaired drivers, and speeders.

Use extra caution on the roads, and the waterways, this holiday.

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
