Marion officials are trying hard to come up with a reasonable compromise regarding the fireworks issue.

Last year, the law allowing the sale of fireworks was passed, and local communities struggled with complaints from annoyed residents upset about all the noise their neighbors were making.

Those complaints have city leaders re-thinking their earlier decisions and stepping back to hopefully quiet all sides.

The latest volley calls for a compromise that would allow Marion resident only two days in which they can legally set off fireworks - on July 4 and again on December 31.  And even on those two days the allowed time to shoot them off would only last for a few hours.

At this point, why even bother?

Without sounding like a grumpy old man, might I suggest they just reinstate the original ban of the use of any and all fireworks that fly, explode and make noise. Let the kids have their cones and towers that emit a shower of sparks but are otherwise silent.

Of  course that leaves a sticky situation with the stupid law that allows the SALE of fireworks in Iowa. You see it's really about the money. It's ALWAYS about the money.

Come to think of it, maybe that damn law should be tossed out. It would solve all the problems mentioned above and then we could all get some peace and quiet.
