Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids is moving ahead with plans for its third emergency room in the metropolitan area. The hospital announced Wednesday that they'll conduct a ribbon-cutting next week.

There are currently Mercy emergency departments in two spots in the Cedar Rapids metro. Mercy Medical Center has an emergency room at the hospital itself (photo above), which is located at 701 10th St. SE in Cedar Rapids.

The other Mercy emergency room is in the Mercy Hiawatha Medical Park at 1195 Boyson Road (photo below). According to a media release from Mercy, when it opened in 2020, it was "the first ER in Iowa available outside of a hospital-based setting."

The newest Mercy emergency room will be at 999 35th Street in Marion, next to the MercyCare Marion Clinic and across 7th Avenue from Hy-Vee. A groundbreaking is planned for Tuesday, October 17 at 1 p.m.

Mercy president and CEO Dr. Timothy Quinn said in a media release, “The new Marion ER location reflects our commitment to adjusting how we provide care based on what is best for the community. We’re being responsive to what patients are telling us they want for healthcare services. Marion is the perfect location for us to expand; the new ER location will provide easier access to a growing community with the major access points of highways 151 and 13 nearby.”

Ryan A+E Inc. partnered with Mercy to design the new building. Ryan Companies US, Inc. is doing the construction.

The Mercy Marion ER is expected to open in late 2024. It will be open around the clock, 365 days a year, and will have on-site lab services and radiology.
