Southwest Side Boil Order Lifted In Cedar Rapids

[UPDATE, 5/9/2020, 10:19 a.m.] Per the City of Cedar Rapids in a press release, the boil order is now lifted and it is safe to consume the water in the outlined areas.

[UPDATE, 5/8/2020, 1:10 p.m.] Per a City of Cedar Rapids Facebook post, proper water pressure has been restored to the listed areas but the boil order remains in effect until after bacteria sampling results are received and studied, expected to be around 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9th. Please continue to boil water before consumption in these areas as of now.

[ORIGINAL STORY]: The City of Cedar Rapids is asking residents in the following neighborhoods to boil their water prior to consumption due to a water main break Thursday morning:

• Schaeffer Dr. SW East to C St SW
• 19th Ave SW South to HWY 30
• 6th Street SW East to J St SW
• 29th Ave SW South to 36th Ave SW

The areas outlined in orange in the graphic above are those affected at this time. Water in all other areas in the city is safe to drink and consume at this time. KCRG reports that a water main serving the Bowling Street booster station and C Street water tower caused a loss of pressure in these areas. They warn of the potential for bacteria and advise residents to take precautionary steps.

Before consuming water in these areas, you should bring water to a boil, let it rapidly boil for at least 60 seconds, then allow it to cool completely before consumption. Repairs have begun and they expect to have them complete and bacteria test results back by 1 p.m. Sunday, May 10. Depending on progress with repairs, they will lift or extend the boil order for users and residents in these areas at that time.
