Growing up in Iowa, one of the most famous local TV pitchmen of all time was simply known as 'The Menards Guy'. He was the super excited spokesperson telling you about all the great deals you could get at Menards! This guy could sell anything! His name was Ray Szmanda and he has passed away at the age of 91.

Ray was featured in advertising for Wisconsin based Menards starting back in 1976. He appeared in commercials for the store up until his retirement back in 1998. Like so many other people my age, I literally grew up with The Menards Guy. Szmanda was a Navy veteran of World War 2 and attended broadcast school in Wausau, Wisconsin.

When you watch a commercial with Szmanda in it, you can't help but notice his over the top delivery style. How could anyone be THAT happy talking about paint and bathroom fixtures? But his friends say that was just his nature. Menards company officials say that his "friendly, enthusiastic, and fun-loving personality made a lasting impression" on Menards customers. That is something to be proud of.
