What you see above is Iowa's best sandwich. Earlier this week, 'People' magazine named the best sandwich in every state and the District of Columbia. Iowa's winner was the tenderloin from Smitty's Tenderloin Shop, which is celebrating its 52nd year in business.

Why Smitty's, at 1401 Army Post Road in Des Moines? 'People' and an online restaurant guide known as The Infatuation combined on the venture. They also used reviews from expert editors and writers to compile their findings. According to the food writer for 'People,' Madison Roberts,

Crowds flock to this old-school diner for fried-food favorites, including the King Loin: a massively wide, breaded-and-fried pork tenderloin placed inside a pillowy bun.

Ben Smith, the 3rd generation owner of Smitty's Tenderloin Shop, describes his restaurant's award-winning tenderloin as coated with cracker crumbs and crispy and light, but not greasy. He's been working at the restaurant that makes approximately 3,000 tenderloins a week since he was 10-years-old. That's nearly 4.7 million tenderloins during his career. I think it's safe to call him an expert.

The hard copy edition of 'People' naming Smitty's as its Iowa winner landed on newsstands today. And this may not be the only publication Smitty's Tenderloin Shop is honored in. They're also one of ten finalists for Iowa's best breaded tenderloin in the USA Today Reader's Choice. Voting continues HERE until 11 a.m. on Monday, June 3.

Smitty's tenderloins are available in four different varieties. There's King, Vegetable, Chili-Cheese, and Taco. Prices range from $4.70 for the small King to $8.60 for the large Taco. Variety is great, but give me the original King. No, give me two. I'll take one home for tomorrow.
