Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; you only need to look to the fact that even though he’s been the villain in four of these films, he’s also getting his own standalone series on Disney+. Believe it or not, though, Hiddleston wasn’t originally in line for the part. In fact, he never auditioned to play Loki. Not once! Instead, he auditioned for months ... to play Thor.

Ultimately, the part came down to Hiddleston and another up-and-coming young actor, Chris Hemsworth. But for three months shortly after Marvel released Iron Man, Hiddleston was in the running to play Marvel Cinematic Universe’s God of Thunder. And this week on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon showed off a brief clip of Hiddleston’s audition for Thor as Thor. He’s got blonde hair and bare arms and everything. Watch it below:

I think you will agree with Hiddleston; the right man got the part. He does not look comfortable swinging that enchanted hammer, and he would have had to put on a lot of muscle to fill out Thor’s Asgardian armor. As Loki, though, Hiddleston was perfect. And he’s going to return as the God of Mischief in Loki, which is expected to premiere on Disney+ in the spring of 2020.
