When you're an undrafted free agent, making the final 53-man NFL roster is no easy task. Teams had to make cuts this week and get down to 53 players by Tuesday. Two former Iowa Hawkeyes who had spent all of training camp and the preseason with the Green Bay Packers learned that they didn't make the final 53-man roster. But fortunately for running back Tyler Goodson and defensive lineman Jack Heflin, they'll get to wear the green and gold a bit longer.

Packersnews reports that both Goodson and Heflin were among the players the Packers officially signed to their practice squad on Wednesday. NFL teams are allowed to keep up to 16 players on their practice squad. Many times these players are activated and put on the official roster due to injuries to other players. Some stay on the practice squad and further develop their skills and eventually become starters.

Defensive lineman Jack Heflin is in his second year in the NFL and with the Green Bay Packers. He went undrafted by the Packers love his high motor and effort. He played in four regular-season games last year and will once again start this regular season on the Green Bay practice squad.

Running back Tyler Goodson signed this offseason as a free agent after going undrafted in the spring NFL Draft. He had some nice moments in the preseason for the Packers rushing for 107 yards and a nifty touchdown run against the San Francisco 49ers.

Both Goodson and Heflin add a little bit of depth to the Green Bay roster at two key positions. While Iowa fans are happy to see them stick in the NFL, as a Packer fan I hope both see limited duty this year. That means the Green Bay starters and star players at those positions are healthy!
