One of the nicer things about the coronavirus outbreak, if you can really call it that, is that the virus doesn't target children as much as it does adults. But as we are learning, that doesn't mean that kids can't contract the disease. The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital has confirmed it's first two COVID-19 pediatric patients.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the hospital isn't releasing the age or gender of the patients, or whether or not that had in preexisting health conditions. The young patients were admitted Wednesday and are being isolated from other children at the hospital in Iowa City.

Counties in Iowa that have reported child cases of COVID-19 include:

  • Allamakee - 2
  • Dubuque - 1
  • Benton - 1
  • Linn - 2
  • Clinton - 1
  • Scott - 1
  • Muscatine -2
  • Henry - 1
  • Polk - 3
  • Pottawattamie - 1
  • Monona - 1

As of Thursday, 16 of Iowa's 1,270 confirmed cases of COVID-19 involved patients under the age of 17. Only around 2% of the overall cases in the United States involve children.
