The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will start offering free parking for patients on its main campus starting on December 3rd. The change comes after years of complaints by patients that parking prices add to the burden of already high medical bills and other inconveniences.

In addition to not charging patients, the hospital also plans to lower rates for visitors in an effort to improve overall satisfaction. The hospital has acknowledged that it has room to improve in that department.

The UIHC parking change will start on December 3rd, when patients can receive a 'patient parking pass' that allows them to park in any of the four ramps for free. Patients can print passes from their MyChart accounts or a clinic or clerk can print one out as well. The patient must then provide the pass to a parking cashier on their way out of the four ramps.

Parking costs can add up quickly for those with extended stays. The daily rate is $10 and will remain that way until December 3rd.
