The University of Iowa has fired head volleyball coach Bond Shymansky for providing an 'impermissible benefit" to get a player to come to Iowa. That is considered a major NCAA penalty and has resulted in penalties for other college programs.

The university announced the firing Wednesday following an outside law firm investigation. Shymansky had been on paid administrative leave. Iowa will now report the violation to the NCAA and will cooperate with whatever happens next.

Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta said via a statement that "we take NCAA violations very seriously, and have acted in a fair and decisive manner." Vicki Brown, who was named the interim head coach, will remain in that role for the upcoming 2019 season.

Symansky was hired as the head coach back in 2014 after spending time at Marquette. He compiled a record of 78-82 in five seasons at the school. Barta announced Shymansky's suspension back on May 20th, saying that a student-athlete had come forward with details of the major NCAA violation.
