The last time the temperature was zero or above in Cedar Rapids was at midnight Thursday night. Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be a long time before we see the mercury rise above that number again and Valentine's Day 2021 is likely to be the coldest in the history of the holiday in eastern Iowa. And, it won't be close.

The National Weather Service forecasts a low temperature of -13 in Cedar Rapids tonight and on Sunday, the temperature isn't expected to climb above zero. That has never happened on Valentine's Day, ever.

KCRG reported on their Saturday morning news that the coldest-ever Valentine's Day in Cedar Rapids history is 6 above zero. That was in 1943. Sunday's forecast is for a high of -2. Breaking a record by eight degrees? Ugh.

In Dubuque, the coldest February 14 is from 1875. That day, it reached 3 degrees above zero. Sunday is expected to top out at -1.

In Iowa City, 7 degrees is the coldest it's ever been on Valentine's Day. That was in 1905. The National Weather Service believes Sunday's high will be -2.

In Waterloo, the coldest Valentine's Day in history was February 14, 1943, just like Cedar Rapids. In Waterloo that day, the high was 5 degrees. Sunday, it's expected to "warm" to only -4.

The worst part of all of the above is don't be surprised if temperatures go even lower tonight and don't even make the forecast highs tomorrow.

Yes, Valentine's Day 2021 will definitely be a day to spend indoors with your special someone. However, the end of this ridiculous deep freeze is on the horizon. We're expected to climb above zero again on Tuesday and from there, VAST improvement. The teens Wednesday through Friday, and near 30 by next Saturday, February 20. Can you imagine how warm that's going to feel?! Pardon me while I go look for my running shorts.
