Surveillance footage captured the moment a Malibu beach house balcony packed with partiers collapsed onto the sand and rocks below, injuring about a dozen people.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene along the Pacific Coast Highway shortly after 5pm Saturday, according to KABC.

Witnesses say they had gathered for a birthday party when the terrifying moment took place.

"There were probably like 10 people on the back deck and we heard a crack and I literally saw all of my best friends and my girlfriend fall 15 feet to the rocks," said one man.

Nine people were evaluated for injuries, including four who were taken to the hospital. Details on the extent of their injuries were not available but none of them seemed to be life-threatening.

"It was a freak accident. I don't know how that happens...the deck literally just gave out," the witness added.

"Down below are jagged rocks, large rocks, so a very dangerous situation and fortunately, no one was hurt seriously or killed," said Captain Ron Haralson with the fire department.

The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
