Happy Valentine's Day! Love is in the air, and also on the screen.

It might have had something to do with the overall outcome of 2020 itself, but with Valentine's Day just a short three weeks away (doesn't it feel like we were JUST talking about Christmas??), a new survey is out from Coupon Lawn, asking "Which Rom-Com Movie Does Your State Love Watching During Valentine's Day?" (Rom-com, as in romantic comedy).

You might think it was "Pretty Woman". Maybe "Say Anything" or "When Harry Met Sally" (all of which I will be watching in the next three weeks, don't judge). NOPE.

Iowa's choice for "Which Rom-Com Movie Does Your State Love Watching During Valentine's Day" is..."10 Things I Hate About You". I've never seen it, I'm sure it's great, but according to Internet Movie Database, the 1999 movie stars Julia Stiles, Joseph-Gordon Leavitt, and the late Heath Ledger and is about "a pretty, popular teenager who can't go out on a date until her ill-tempered older sister does." Definitely sounds like an aggravated nod to the stir-craziness of social distancing to me.

It's a little less "Inconceivable!" as to the top choice overall. Selected by 10 states, it was "The Princess Bride". As for what some of our midwest neighbors chose:

  • Illinois: "The Princess Bride"
  • Minnesota: "50 First Dates"
  • Missouri: "The Proposal"
  • Nebraska: "The 40-Year Old Virgin"
  • South Dakota: "The Proposal"
  • Wisconsin: "The 40-Year Old Virgin"

Coupon Lawn compiled their findings using Google Trends and Google AdWords to compare the total search volume of terms like “where to watch Pretty Woman”, “watch Pretty Woman online” and other similar terms during Valentine’s Day in each state
