Dr. Dennis Norem made his weekly visit to the show to give us the latest on the coronavirus, COVID-19, and the vaccine rollout.

For approximately the 30th straight week, Dr. Norem wanted to initially focus on encouraging people to get the vaccine if they have not already. I fully realize that is getting to be a broken record for some people but it remains the safest way out of the pandemic according to literally every medical professional we have ever talked to on the show.

You can listen to the whole interview here.

The delta variant of the coronavirus has taken another turn for the worse since we last spoke with Dr. Norem. Hospitals have begun admitting younger and younger patients that are coming in with severe COVID complications. During the first wave of the original coronavirus, those under 40 were considered relatively safe and those under 18 were essentially immune. That has changed over the past few weeks and Dr. Norem explains some of the theories why.

We also asked him what we're talking about when the term "herd immunity" is used. There have been a lot of numbers linked to what we need for herd immunity, but who is immune? If someone had COVID but doesn't have the vaccine, are they immune? Are they "more" immune than someone who has only been vaccinated? What is the situation if a booster shot becomes recommended? Are those that have only had the original vaccine but not the booster part of the "herd."

It's a complex question that we don't have the time or expertise to fully break down on the show but Dr. Norem does a great job of breaking it down in only a few minutes.

We thank Dr. Norem for his time and look forward to learning some more during his next visit, Monday morning at 7:05.
