The largest steam locomotive in the world will be in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, July 30.

There were originally 25 Big Boy locomotives built for the Union Pacific Railroad in the 1940s. They traveled between Wyoming and Utah for almost two decades but now there's only one left. After being removed from a park and restored over a 5-year period, Big Boy No. 4014 is traveling around the midwest to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad being completed.

Big Boy No. 4014 is scheduled to arrive in Cedar Rapids at 4900 General Mills Road (near Highway 30 and Edgewood Road) Tuesday, July 30 at 5:15 p.m., where it will spend the night. It departs at 9 a.m. the following morning, July 31. It will also stop in Clinton, Belle Plaine, Marshalltown, Elkhart, Des Moines, Boone, Carroll, and Woodbine. Des Moines is the only stop that will allow visitors to "Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car." It's a multi-media walk-through exhibition. Specifics HERE with the full schedule of where and when the locomotive will stop in Iowa cities HERE.

The massive locomotive is 132-feet in length and weighs well over a million pounds.

Here's video of the locomotive in Augusta, Wisconsin on July 24, 2019. Eastern Iowans will get their chance to see it up close next week.
