A Linn County Neighborhood Has Over 100,000 Christmas Lights
For over a decade, a neighborhood over in Walker, Iowa has been blowing people away with their impressive holiday lights. Blue Creek Christmas, located at 4942 Blue Creek Court, is the perfect example of a community coming together to spread Christmas cheer AND raise money for a deserving cause!
Aaron Maue and his wife Deb are the masterminds behind Blue Creek Christmas, and they had no idea how big it would become when they started it back in 2011. According to a 2021 article from the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the first display was located only on Aaron's property and had around 18,000 lights. A few years in, the neighbors decided they wanted in on the action, and now the show gets bigger and better with every season!
One of the coolest aspects of Blue Creek Christmas is that the display is synchronized to over 25 minutes of music. Guests can park on the street outside the house and tune their radios to 97.1 FM to hear a variety of Christmas songs. This year, Aaron estimates that there are more than 100,000 lights just on his property alone! You can check out last year's display below:
Blue Creek Christmas is free for everyone to enjoy, but there is a an option to donate to a charitable organization during your visit. An average of $13,000 is raised every year for a different group. Donations from the 2022 display will go to Center Point Regional Ambulance. They are in need of new radios, which cost about $4,000 each!
If you'd like to check out Blue Creek Christmas this season, it runs nightly through January 8th. The hours Sunday through Thursday are 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday & Saturday's hours are 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. On Christmas Day, the display will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. You can get directions and any other information you need on Blue Creek Christmas' Facebook page HERE.
