A few weeks ago, my family came out to visit me from the East Coast. We got to explore some popular spots all throughout Eastern Iowa. I took my family to ALL of the farmers markets, the Field of Dreams, and we made a trip out to Dubuque to check out the Fenelon Street Elevator.

I've been to all of these places before, but I discovered something new during my family's visit.

We made a trip to the grocery store and I saw some adorable looking pastries that would be a perfect dessert for my sister and I. Turns out they are the BEST little pastries either of us have had.

My sister and I got a six pack of the tiny sweets and ran out by the next morning.

They are two vanilla cookies with a cream in the middle and on top. At first glance they kind of look like macaroons. They are called Bambinos!

Isn't that the cutest name you've ever heard for a pastry?

These little pastries are sold in a few Hy-Vees across the Cedar Valley. They all come from a little bakery with a great cause in Waterloo.

Bambinos (the bakery) opened in early March of this year at their location at at 1445 Ansborough Avenue.

Bambinos is the passion project of a local cancer survivor named Donna O'Brien. The bakery is described on its Facebook page as a combination of her, "Italian heritage, love for baking and passion for helping others."

O'Brien has been running the business from her own home for several years. Some of her products are sold at select Hy-Vee grocery stores across the state; specifically, Des Moines, Ankeny, Waterloo, and Cedar Falls, as reported by the Waterloo Courier.

O'Brien is the brains behind the operation and a breast cancer survivor as well. She has insisted since the bakery's inception that a portion of the profits goes towards a non-profit organization called Beyond Pink Team.

If you're thinking of stopping by to find something to sate that sweet tooth, here are Bambinos hours:
