Former WNBA Star Spreads Lies About Iowa’s Caitlin Clark

For most basketball fans, watching Caitlin Clark play and break records along the way is a thrill. After scoring 38 points in a win against Maryland over the weekend, she is closing in on the NCAA women's scoring record. But others, out of jealousy or other misguided feelings, look to tear Clark down with lies. A former WNBA star and basketball legend Sheryl Swoopes is the latest to spread lies about Clark, but the University of Iowa is striking back!

Swoopes made her false comments about Clark in a video that has since gone viral on X. Clark is just 66 points behind Kelsey Plum for the NCAA women's scoring record. Hawk Fanatic reports that in the video Swoopes claims that Clark has played more games than Plum.

If you’re going to break a record, to me, if it’s legitimate, you have to break that record in the same amount of time that that player set it, right. So, if Kelsey Plum set that record in four years, well, Caitlin should have broken that record in four years. But because there was a Covid year, and then there’s another year, she’s already had an extra year to break that record. So, is it truly a broken record? I don’t know.

Why would Stoopes say something that is so patently false? As Hawk Fanatic points out, yes, Caitlin Clark does have a COVID year of eligibility. But she hasn't taken it yet! There are doubts that she will take the extra year. The other lies that Swoopes tried to pass off include that Clark is a 25-year-old playing against younger competition and that she averages 40 shots per game, according to On3.com. Where is Swoopes getting this crap?

As Hawk Fanatic points out, Caitlin Clark is a 22-year-old senior at the University of Iowa, one of many 22-year-olds playing college basketball. She will not only break Plum's record but she'll do it in fewer games, not more. Not to mention she is helping boost the popularity of the women's game, so much that fans at AWAY arenas stand in line for hours just to catch a glimpse of her playing.

The University of Iowa women's basketball program wanted to clear up any other misconceptions about Caitlin Clark going forward. So for Sheryl Swoopes and all the other haters out there, we hope this clears things up.

The Iowa women host Penn State on Thursday night and travel to Nebraska on Sunday. Clark is expected to break Kelsey Plum's scoring record on February 15th at home versus Michigan. LET'S HAWKS!
