Imagine coming home and finding out that you had been robbed. Worse yet, imagine being home when the break-in actually occurred. That's what happened to a Cedar Rapids man. But unfortunately for him, HE is the one now facing charges.

Police responded to a report of a burglary near Florida Court SW early Sunday morning. The victim, 21-year-old Dakota Nelson, told police that someone had broken into his home and stolen a purse. Nelson also informed officers at that time that he did own a handgun, but told them he had not discharged it. Police didn't buy the story and checked surveillance video. The footage showed that Nelson chased the suspect and fired his gun at a vehicle. He was arrested on one count of reckless use of a firearm.

It may seem a bit unfair that Nelson faces charges, but the burglar is still at large. But even if you own a gun legally, you can't chase after someone and fire it. Even if that person has broken the law. Had Nelson used his gun within his own home, he may have been safe under Iowa law that allows a person to defend their home and property with reasonable force. Leave the pursuit up to law enforcement.
