In the story of the shooting that took place at Taboo Nightclub & Lounge in downtown Cedar Rapids this weekend, another development was reported this afternoon.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Timothy Liddell Rush, 32, shot both Nicole Owens, 35, and another man. The man suffered serious injuries, while Owens died. Rush reportedly fathered a child with Owens. The two had the child in 2021, and Rush also stated he once worked at the club.

Rush faces multiple charges

  • Second-degree murder
  • Willful injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon
  • Reckless use of a firearm, and
  • Possession of a firearm as a felon

He was arrested Monday, one day after the shooting that took place early Sunday morning, and his first court hearing took place Tuesday morning. Rush is currently being held in Linn County Jail on $1.5 million cash or surety bond for the murder charge and an additional $10,000 cash-only bail for the charge of possession of a firearm as a felon.

The second suspect is still unknown

In addition to Owens, 25-year-old Michael Valentine was also killed. Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman stated over the weekend that he believed a second shooter was involved. A criminal complaint released Tuesday does not address who the second shooting suspect is after both Owens and 25-year-old Michael Valentine were killed. 10 others suffered injuries including the man we mentioned earlier in this story. It said in the criminal complaint he was shot in the head and suffered serious injuries.

Valentine and Owens were both reportedly at the club to celebrate a mutual friend's birthday when the shooting took place just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning. The criminal complaint states that Rush,

appeared to have fired intentionally and indiscriminately, with what is believed to be a 9 mm handgun, into a large crowd of people after an initial shooting took place resulting in shooting both Owens and --------- (we've removed the name of a man who suffered a serious injury, but was not killed) and possibly several others...

There were 9 mm shell casings that were collected from the area where the defendant discharged the firearm into the assembly of people. A search of his residence revealed the presence of a Hi-Point 9mm firearm and preliminary test firing and comparison to shell casings found on the scene indicated that firearm was used...
