Saturday was an exciting sprint to the finish line for two Iowa runners.

As we previously told you last week, Jenny Simpson of Webster City and Shelby Houlihan of Sioux City were both slated to compete in Des Moines in the 1,500-meter race at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.

In an exciting race, the two were neck-and-neck with family, friends and fans cheering them on, until the final 50 meters, when Houlihan gained the edge with a time of 4 minutes and 5.48 seconds. Simpson finished close behind at 4 minutes, 6.21 seconds, a difference of only 33-hundredths of a second.

Both runners are familiar with each other as friends and rivals through high school and have competed in many races at the Drake Relays, held at Drake Stadium, the same location as this USA Championships race.

According to the Gazette, Houlihan did wion another race against another fellow Iowan, beating Urbandale's Karissa Schweitzer in the 5,000 meters.
