Cedar Rapids Kernels Will Play in Field of Dreams Throwback
On Thursday, August 11, the Field of Dreams will play host to its second-ever Major League Baseball game. Two days before that, on Tuesday, August 9, the minor leagues will get in on the action as two Eastern Iowa clubs will "throwback" to a classic era from over a century ago.
Iowa's News Now says the Cedar Rapids Bunnies will take on the Davenport Blue Sox. You know them better today as the Kernels and River Bandits, respectively, but they will be playing under the monikers they used from 1904-1932 for the Kernels (Bunnies) and three different periods for the River Bandits, who played as the Blue Sox from 1913-1916 and again off and on from 1929-1937.
We are honored to have the opportunity to play in the first Minor League game at such an iconic venue,” Cedar Rapids General Manager Scott Wilson said. “This will certainly be an incredible experience for our players, our organization, and our great fans.
Earlier this month, the new owners of the Field of Dreams, a group that includes former major league Hall of Famer Frank Thomas, announced what, for many Iowans who grew up loving the mystique and nostalgia of the site in Dyersville, amounted to more like a nightmare. In one of the previous stories about the new development, we reported:
A group of developers from Chicago will build 9 softball and baseball fields. Dorms for the players and a hotel for fans. That will be completed by the end of 2023. But that's not all. There will also be a 100,000-square-foot field house, an amphitheater, and an RV park, according to KCRG.
You can learn more about that development here. Let's leave that in the future and focus on the fun news at hand for now.
The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds will take the field for that "second-ever" Field of Dreams major league game on August 11.
Tickets and more info for the minor league throwback between Cedar Rapids and Quad Cities will be available at a later time.
