On April 9th, 2021, Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith #462, a 27-year-veteran of the Patrol, was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a barricaded subject in Grundy Center, IA.

Accoridng to Sgt. Smith's obituary;

Jim is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kathy Smith of Independence; his children, Zander and Jazlyn; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Tom Akin of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Jeff Smith of Wylie, Texas; a sister, Michelle "Mouse" Suchomel; his father- and mother-in-law, John and Cindy Glanz; two sisters-in-law, Annie (William) Builta and Debbie (Andy) Van Ommeran; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many extended family members, and his brothers and sisters in blue.

A Memorial Fund has been set up to benefit his family. Since the announcement of the fund, fundraisers have popped up around the state to benefit Sgt. Smith's family.

One near the Quad Cities will be taking place on May 15th in Eldridge at Ego Eimi Fitness.

The gym is holding a fundraising "462 Workout" class, where all proceeds will benefit the family.

In addition, the Ego Eimi is also selling merchandise with Sgt. Smith's name and badge number.
