I have a short attention-span and am a bit of a commitment-phobe. Not when it comes to the important things, mind you, like work and family obligations. But things like "binge watch every episode of a certain show" or "lose weight" just aren't high on the priority list (although if you've seen me in person, you might think the latter should be!)

Because of these reasons, I tend not to make New Year's Resolutions. For 2016, I toyed with the idea of learning how to play the trumpet. That, however, would require buying or renting one, which requires money. I'll have to show you the typical radio paycheck sometime. Then, I'd also have to find someone to give me lessons, which also takes money, and I'd have to practice in between lessons. There's that attention-span and commitment problem again.

I've actually had a pseudo-resolution the last couple years that I've actually done pretty well with. But the fact that I say it's been my resolution for multiple years tells you I'm not quite there yet. I gave myself the open-ended New Year's Resolution to "be more social", but without specific parameters, I have no frame of progress. Going out with friends about twice a year has definitely been an improvement on previous social activity, though.

Being reminded again recently how short life is, 2017 might be a better time than ever to commit to these resolutions.  I think about a line from a classic Huey Lewis & The News song, called "Jacob's Ladder". In it, they say  "All I want from tomorrow, is to get it better than today". A friend and former local radio personality also posts this as his resolution on Facebook every year and I'm going to follow his lead. I think the goal should always simply be to do the best we can and then do better the next time--in the event we get a next time. "Step by step, rung by rung" is a good way to climb life's ladder.
