According to a Hawkeye Area Action Program (HACAP) press release, the Head Start and Early Head Start programs are comprehensive early childhood development programs that serve kids from birth to age 5, pregnant women, and their families. This program has the overall goal of increasing school readiness for children in low-income families.

HACAP has recently announced they have received over $2 million to broaden their service area for the  Head Start and Early Head Start programs into three additional Eastern Iowa counties.

They already serve over 740 Benton, Linn, Johnson, Jones, Iowa, and Washington county children and their families and are about to add Dubuque, Delaware, and Jackson counties thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Upwards of $500,000 of the latest grant will help fill 190 additional Head Start openings from October 1 through the end of 2020. Plus, an allotment of an additional $2,260,354 is earmarked to be put towards operations in 2021.

We work closely on numerous projects with HACAP throughout the year. We appreciated the opportunity just a few weeks ago to promote their HomeRun For Hunger campaign when, in association with First Federal Credit Union and the Cedar Rapids Kernels and thanks to your generosity, they were able to collect over 2,000 pounds of food donations.
