A lineup of free music at Hiawatha's Guthridge Park every Friday night in August is canceled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and another summer weekend tradition is called off as well.

The first of these Music in the Park concerts was scheduled for opening night of the "Hiawatha Fun Fest" weekend event the first weekend in August, which the city's Parks & Recreation Department has also announced will not take place this summer.

The "Music in the Park" series was set to feature local favorites including Compass Rose, the Bamboozlers, New Trick, and Robby Vee and Caravan.

As a resident of Hiawatha, I appreciate that these events are always family-friendly and community-minded. Concessions are served by community clubs and organizations that keep the proceeds for their programs.

We are disappointed so many things are being canceled this year, but safety is of paramount concern to the city for its staff, performers and residents. We look forward to seeing them back and better than ever in 2021.

Learn more about an event that WILL be offered in Hiawatha this summer at their Facebook page, a Pop-Up Drive-in movie featuring "Ferdinand" at the Kirkwood Regional Learning Center, 1770 Boyson Rd. on July 17. Tickets are free but reservations are encouraged.

"All social distancing guideline recommendations will be asked of all guests in attendance. Guests are asked to stay in their vehicles unless going to the restroom." Food will NOT be served at this event, so bring your own and enjoy something that's actually ON this summer!
