Hiawatha's Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) facility will be the site this Thursday, June 18, for a presentation to the organization in the amount of over $94,500.

Hy-Vee is making the donation as part of the over $1 million it raised during a campaign to help local food banks during the COVID-19 pandemic. A press release notes that "from March 23 to May 31, Hy-Vee customers within the food bank’s region were encouraged to donate $1 or more at checkout or via Hy-Vee Aisles Online. Hy-Vee matched donations dollar for dollar up to $500,000 from the Hy-Vee One Step program, which is funded by proceeds from sales of select Hy-Vee products to assist those in need."

The check presentation will begin Thursday at 11 a.m. at HACAP, 1115 Hawkeye Dr. in Hiawatha. HACAP has been able to use funds raised by this campaign to help purchase goods and supplies from Hy-Vee to help its over 134 partner agencies across seven counties Iowa.

It marks a conclusion to an eight-state fundraising campaign on Hy-Vee's part and shows the goodness that local community organizations in Iowa are known for, aligning to provide help when it's needed most. Over the pandemic, other donation projects have taken place to help HACAP serve its community including volunteers packing over 5,000 boxes of donated food at the ImOn Ice Arena, while Hy-Vee and HACAP came together on another donation project for frontline health workers. HACAP also offered help with energy costs for those residents laid off due to COVID-19, and their mobile food pantry continues to roll.
