To onlookers, Thursday's 1A championship game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls was an exciting, good game to watch. Many people probably didn't even realize that history was being made, right in front of their eyes.

Van Meter defeated West Sioux in the 1A championship game Thursday in a close game. In the contest, sophomore Katie Lindsay made history. Lindsay, who's been the kicker for Van Meter throughout their undefeated season, kicked a pair of extra points and a 27-yard field goal. The field goal came with 7:21 to go in the game and extended Van Meter's lead to 10 points. It ended up being the difference in the Bulldogs 17-14 win. The school's second state championship. The points were the first scored by a female in a state football championship game in Iowa.

Lindsay had an incredible first season on the gridiron for Van Meter. According to Varsity Bound, she made 73 of 76 point after touchdown (PAT) attempts this season. That's good for 96 percent of her attempts and a school record for PATs in a single season.

During the 2021 season. Lindsay was perfect in field goal attempts, going 2 for 2. There wasn't much need for field goal attempts this year. Van Meter had seven shutouts during their 13-0 season and outscored their opponents 572-68. Like I said, not much need for three-point attempts when you're winning by those types of margins.

Here's a photo of Lindsay kicking an extra point in last week's 1A semifinal game in Cedar Falls.

After attending football camps this past summer, Lindsay put in a lot of work to achieve her goal of playing a new sport. Things worked out beautifully for both Katie Lindsay and her teammates... all now state champions.
