It's been a phenomenal year for girls high school basketball teams in our area and it has the chance to become downright special. Twenty teams remain in the 2017 Girls State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines and seven of them are from Linn and Johnson counties.

Quarterfinal action continues at 10 this morning in Class 4A with the Marion Indians taking on Boone. A victory would mean Marion would play Friday morning for the chance to play in Saturday night's (6 p.m.) championship game.

One of the 4A semifinals is already decided and will include Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Saints won their 11th straight last night and will do battle with North Scott Friday morning at 10. It's possible Marion and Cedar Rapids Xavier could meet in Saturday night's title game. How much fun would that be?!

In Class 5A, Iowa City West is one of the teams in the field. They take on Waukee tonight at 6:45. If the Trojans win tonight, they play Friday afternoon for the chance to play in Saturday night's (8 p.m.) championship game.

Also in 5A, Iowa City High plays Cedar Falls at 3:15 today. The Little Hawks have just one loss on the season.

Three area teams have already made the semifinals. They are Springville, Iowa City Regina, and Center Point-Urbana.

Springville, the defending 1A champion, plays Kingsley-Pierson Thursday morning at 10. A victory puts them in Friday night's (6 p.m.) championship game.

In Class 2A, Iowa City Regina plays Western Christian Thursday afternoon at 1:30. A victory means a trip to Friday night's (8 p.m.) championship game versus Treynor or, another area team, Cascade.

Finally, in Class 3A, Center Point-Urbana will take on Pocahontas Area Thursday night at 6:45. If they win, they play in the first championship game Saturday, at 4 p.m. This is CPU's second consecutive trip to the semifinals.

The seven teams from Linn and Johnson counties, going into today, have a combined record of 155-16. A win percentage of 91 percent. No matter what happens for these teams today, or in the coming days, that's nothing short of remarkable. Congrats ladies on incredible seasons so far, and best of luck!
