Watch your pets closely.

You should be keeping an eye on your pets anyway but now, you definitely should if you want you and your pet to stay healthy.

If you've had pets for any amount of time, you know that oftentimes they will eat anything. It doesn't matter what it is, if they think it's a suitable snack, they'll go for it.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship has issued a warning for all pet owners in the state. They're advising that you keep your dogs and cats away from all sick or deceased birds because of the increasing spread of bird flu.

They're also asking to keep your indoor/outdoor cats from hunting wildlife for the same reason. Cats need the thrill of the hunt so this is when you get a laser toy to satisfy it.

Bird flu can kill cats and dogs, even resulting in sudden death. Here are some of the symptoms to look out for:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Red eyes
  • Discharge from eyes or nose
  • Neurological issues (tremors, seizures, blindness, incoordination)

How To Prevent It

The Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship has more tips on how to prevent your animals from catching bird flu:

  • Don't feed them raw, uncooked, or unpasteurized frozen or freeze-dried milk, eggs, meat or organs
  • Keep them away from poultry or cattle
  • Wash your hands after interacting with livestock, before you pet your pets

Vet bills are expensive but it would be even more awful to lose a pet to bird flu, so if you're concerned for the health of your pet, consult your vet.
