Ethyl is a 10-year-old dog from Centerville, Iowa, and she went missing suddenly a little over a week ago. She's home safely now, thanks to some kayakers with a good eye.

Ethyl was spotted by the kayakers standing on the banks of an island along the Chariton River in Centerville. When they paddled over to her, she was skittish and covered in ticks from the wooded area she'd been hiding out in on the island.

After gaining her trust, Ethyl boarded one of the kayaks, where they were able to read her tags and call her owner.

The kayakers drifted down river for a few hours before they reached a point they could leave and meet up with the dog's owner.

"If we wouldn't have gotten her off the river, there was no way of getting her off that riverbank," said kayaker Shakira Sias. "The waters come up so much now that she would have been washed away into that."

"She was shaken and scared," Jessica Rose, told KCCI. "But I don't know about two hours later she was standing up. She was happy. She seemed to actually kind of like floating down the river."

The trio of kayakers said they're making plans with Ethyl's owners for another visit soon to catch up.
