Iowa Native To Serve As U.S. Army’s Top Officer

An Iowa native has been elected to serve as the top U.S. Army Officer.

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate voted to elect General Randy George as Chief of Staff of the Army, according to CBS2. The vote was 96-1. George is a native of Alden, Iowa. General George served as acting Chief of Staff of the Army and before was Vice Chief. CBS2 reports that he has now worked as a senior official under the Secretary of Defense, and commanded divisions across the U.S. and Afghanistan. He was also deployed in Iraq.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley nominated General George to the Military Academy at West Point nearly 40 years ago. CBS2 reports that in a statement, Senator Grassley noted that General George is the right man for the job.

Gen. George brings to the helm of the Army a keen understanding of its capabilities and needs. He has the experience, vision and will to serve that the job demands, with the Iowa common sense to match. I congratulate Gen. George on his confirmation and look forward to working with him on matters of defense and national security.

CNN reports that along with General George's appointment, General Eric Smith was voted to be commandant of the Marine Corps. On Wednesday, General C.Q. Brown was voted to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
