Airport delays are a bummer and a pain no matter how you slice it. But it can be challenging when you're trying to get from one side of the globe to another to make it on time to a significant event.

Kristin Venditti lives in South Africa and has a son who has been attending school at Grand View University in Des Moines. She was on her way to Iowa to see him graduate when her flight got canceled in Chicago.

According to KCCI, that was when Dave and Gayle Bogess of Urbandale put their version of "Iowa Nice" to work. They, too, were stranded at the airport in Chicago on their way back home from a trip to Egypt but, upon hearing Venditti's story, they knew her need was much more urgent. They managed to get one of the last rental cars available and since they were on their way back to roughly the same area of Central Iowa anyway, they offered Venditti a ride so she could see her son's important moment in person.

For her part, Gayle Bogess said:

I know what it's like to be a mom and [have] graduation and I wouldn't want to miss it either. I understand where you're coming from. So I just couldn't think about leaving her there

For Kristen Venditti, the Bogess' generosity was nothing short of a miracle. Needless to say, her son, Alessandro, was extremely grateful:

I was completely stunned because it's something that you never think would happen. Especially in Chicago, at one of the biggest airports in America. So it was amazing to me.

Because of this simple act by a pair of Iowans helping a stranger, an important milestone wasn't missed and a lifelong friendship has now developed. How amazing, indeed.

What Non-Iowans Think of Iowa

Iowa is the capital of the Midwest! Ok, that's unofficial, but it's my stance. Here's what NON Iowans think of us.
