UPDATE: Charge Dropped Against IA Senator Arrested During RAGBRAI

[UPDATE 10/10/23 10:08 AM] An Interference with Official Acts charge has been dismissed against Iowa State Senator Adrian Dickey.

Dickey, who is from Jefferson County in southeast Iowa, had been charged in July after being charged with refusing to move off a roadway when asked by police. Dickey said at the time he was "absolutely innocent of the charges filed against me."

On Friday, October 6, Sac County Attorney Benjamin John Smith filed a Motion to Dismiss charges against Dickey. That motion has been granted.

In a statement we received from Senator Dickey, he said, "It was a total misunderstanding and I was innocent. It is typical of todays (sic) news outlets to pile on and assume someone's guilt without knowing all of the facts. The truth is it would not have been easy to be a law enforcement officer on that hot day. I was not drinking and I was not a part of the party that was taking place. I was only walking my bike on this short part of a gravel road attempting to get on the bike trail." stated Dickey.

This incident has not changed Senator Dickey's support for law enforcement. "In 50 years, I have NEVER been arrested. I appreciate the Sac County Attorney for correcting this and restoring my reputation. I have always been a huge supporter of law enforcement and I continue to back the blue today. I look forward to championing the efforts of the men and women who protect our communities."-Senator Adrian Dickey

[ORIGINAL STORY 7/27/23 04:44 AM] The 50th annual bike ride across the state of Iowa known as RAGBRAI and its thousands of riders is preparing to enter Eastern Iowa later today. Tens of thousands of cyclists and support staff will ride from Des Moines to the Tama-Toledo area today. This year's ride just happens to come during the hottest week of the summer, and perhaps it was the hot weather that caused tempers to flare recently.

KCRG reports that an Iowa state senator was arrested and charged with a simple misdemeanor after he refused to listen to law enforcement officials while on RAGBRAI. According to the criminal complaint filed in court, Senator Adrian Dickey of Packwood, Iowa was taken into custody on Monday afternoon. He posted a $300 bond that same day and has a court hearing set for August 8th.

Sac County Sheriff Sgt. Jonathan Meyer stated that he was working at RAGBRAI and saw a large group of people in the middle of a road that needed to be cleared, according to KCRG. Meyer notes that he asked Sen. Dickey to move, but Dickey stated that "he was not going to move" and "to arrest him." So that is exactly what Officer Meyer did. Dickey was arrested and taken to the Sac County Jail and charged with interference with official acts.

In a statement, Dickey states that he is "absolutely innocent of the charges filed against me." All inquiries are to be directed towards his legal team.
