Iowa: Another Winter Storm Looks Likely This Weekend

Ready or not, here we go. Again. It appears another major winter storm is headed our way this weekend.

The winter of 2020-21 was a breeze for the first few days after it officially started on December 21. Remember, we didn't have a white Christmas? Then came December 29, when KCRG reports that Cedar Rapids received about 9 inches of the white stuff. January 14, almost 2 more inches. As you know all too well, Monday and Tuesday brought another biggie, with different parts of Cedar Rapids receiving between 6 and 8 inches, according to CBS 2. Here are the totals from the latest storm, from across the state:

Add up all the snow Cedar Rapids has received so far this winter, and Rebecca tells me the total stands at 27.3 inches. That's less than 5 inches away from Cedar Rapids' total annual snowfall average of 32 inches. We might go above-average soon.

Meteorologist Rebecca Kopelman at our news and weather partner, CBS 2, says the chances of another major winter storm this weekend are increasing. I don't care for the path of that low-pressure system (image below).

Here's hoping we stay on the cold side enough to stay away from icy precipitation. The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities says "there is an increasing probability of accumulating snowfall." Unfortunately, a large chunk of Iowa is in the area that has the highest probability of accumulating snowfall from the storm (see below).

[Thursday afternoon update] Here's the newest information from the National Weather Service in Des Moines:

[Thursday morning update] The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities said Thursday morning that there's a "high probability of seeing some accumulating snow for areas along and north of Interstate 80." The current Cedar Rapids forecast calls for 3 to 5 inches of snow Saturday night.
