When it comes to health, folks in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines are pretty average!

WalletHub recently did a study to figure out the healthiest and unhealthiest cities in America in 2020. They used "43 key indicators of good health" to determine their list, with categories like percentages of physically active adults, the number of healthy restaurants per capita, premature death rates, and the average cost of medical visits. Out of the 170 cities examined, Cedar Rapids came in at number 87, while Des Moines was ranked 96th.

Cedar Rapids did very well in the overall category of "Health Care," coming in 14th place. Unfortunately, in the category of "Food" we did really bad, ranking 145th, and for "Green Space" we were 123rd. For "Fitness" we came in 69th place.

Four out of the top five healthiest cities are over on the West Coast. Those cities are:

  1. San Francisco, California
  2. Seattle, Washington
  3. San Diego, California
  4. Portland, Oregon
  5. Washington, DC

On the other hand, the top five unhealthiest cities are all in the south:

  1. Brownsville, Texas
  2. Laredo, Texas
  3. Gulfport, Mississippi
  4. Shreveport, Louisiana
  5. Memphis, Tennessee
