Linn County Approves Final Reading of ATV Ordinance

Government leaders in Linn County have given their final approval to an all-terrain vehicle ordinance that will allow those vehicles to be operated on most county roads. KCRG reports that the Linn County Board of Supervisors approved the ordinance by a vote of 2-1. Stacey Walker and Brent Oleson voted yes, and Ben Rogers voted no.

The ordinance will officially be published on June 5th, and will then go into effect. KCRG says that it will likely be amended in the coming weeks as well, to add more roads to a list of restricted roads where ATVs will not be allowed to operate.

Other rules outlined in the ordinance include drivers having a valid drivers license and be at least 16 years old. Anyone 18 years of age and younger driving an ATV will have had to pass an approved education course through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. They will also be required to wear a helmet.

KCRG reports that ATVs will only be allowed to drive on county roads between sunrise and sunset. Vehicle speeds will be limited to 35 mph, and will not be allowed in parks or wildlife areas. The current list of restricted roadways for ATVs in Linn County includes:

• C Avenue Extension – Marion City Limits to County Home Road
• Cedar River Road – Highway 30 to Highway 1

• Cottage Grove Road
• County Home Road
• East Post Road
• Ely Road
• F Avenue NW – Cedar Rapids City Limits to Palo
• Feather Ridge Road
• Indian Hill Road
• Lakeside Road
• Mount Vernon Road
• Munier Road
• North 10th Street – Marion City Limits to County Home Road
• North Alburnett Road – Marion City Limits to Alburnett
• North Center Point Road North Mentzer Road
• Sawyer Road
• Secrist Road
• Shellsburg Road
• Stoney Point Road
• Tower Terrace Road
• Winslow Road
• Wright Brothers Blvd

Rules outlined in the newly passed ordinance will only apply in unincorporated areas of Linn County. Municipalities can set their own rules regarding the use of ATVs.
