Major CR Roadways To Undergo Construction
The 'Paving for Progress' program is a one cent local option sales tax that was approved 4 years ago. The ten-year project will raise nearly $200 million toward repairing Cedar Rapids' roadways. Some high profile roadways will see work done during the fifth year of the project.
Nearly 30 projects will be done this year, but there are 3 that could affect how commuters get to where they need to go. Memorial Drive from Bever Ave. to Mt. Vernon Road will be reconstructed. O Ave. between Ellis Blvd. and 16th street will also be rebuilt with new sewers and utilities. The other big project is Wilson Ave. SW. The intersection near Hoover Elementary will be rebuilt with a roundabout. There have been 67 collisions at the intersection in the past decade.
City planners say they are aware of the headaches that the construction can cause for motorists and business owners. The city will provide signs letting people know that affected businesses are still open.
