Major Retailers Phasing Out CD Sales

It's a strange world we live in when vinyl record sales are up, and the compact disc continues to be phased out. Yes, the days of going to your favorite electronics store and picking up a CD are nearly done. A report early this year said that Best Buy would eliminate sales of CDs in by July 1st. And while they haven't completely stopped selling them, the writing is on the wall.

According to new reports, the total termination of CD sales at Best Buy is a bit premature. But the company says that it is significantly reducing space dedicated to selling CDs and will only offer "select CDs." This shouldn't really come as much of a surprise to anyone in a day when we get most of our music via streaming and the internet. Yes, I've purchased a CD in the last calendar year. My car stereo is old enough that I can't hook up my iPhone to it. But I realize I'm in the minority.

Best Buy isn't the only large retailer preparing to dump CDs altogether. Target is also preparing to cut the amount of space they devote to CD sales. While Target says they still see significant revenue from CD sales, you can expect only to see new release CDs in Target very soon.
