More Memories of Gregg Scharnau

The memories keep flooding back as tonight, we honor our friend Gregg "Shark" Scharnau, with a celebration of life to which the public is invited starting at 7 p.m. at Theatre Cedar Rapids. They are located at 102 3rd Street SE.

One of the many endearing qualities of Gregg was his sense of humor. Like his personality, it was larger than life. But, sometimes, you couldn't always tell where the sarcasm ended and the sincerity began. Such was the case with me whenever he brought up '80s pop group The Motels.

Gregg was an Eastern Iowa rock radio icon at our sister station, 94.1 KRNA, but he also ran a daily shift here on 104-5 KDAT doing middays. He excelled at both, because he loved all kinds of music, and loved being on the air. The KDAT midday timeslot includes our all-'80s lunch hour, the Retro Cafe. Gregg always talked about The Motels being one of his favorite "Retro Cafe" bands, so listen for them today on the Retro Cafe at noon. We miss you, Gregg.
