[UPDATE] Cedar Rapids police have identified the victim in a one-vehicle accident in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, September 24. 25-year-old Ricardo M. Hernandez of Garland, Texas was killed in the accident.

Accident reconstruction specialists with the Cedar Rapids Police Department are waiting for an autopsy report from the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, including toxicology information.

[ORIGINAL STORY] The Cedar Rapids Police Department is investigating a Thursday afternoon crash on Interstate 380 in Cedar Rapids that killed one person.

According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, firefighters and officers were called to the one-vehicle crash on northbound I-380, just north of 29th Street NE, a little before 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

A preliminary investigation shows a full-size sport utility vehicle lost control while traveling on the interstate before hitting a pole, rolling over, and stopping in the ditch. No other vehicles were involved. When emergency crews arrived, they found a man had been ejected from the sport utility vehicle.

After assessing the victim, emergency personnel pronounced the dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is continuing to investigate the accident. Northbound I-380 between 29th Street and 32nd Street N.E. will have lane closures as the accident investigation continues. There's no timeline on when the investigation may end, and all lanes will be reopened.

The IDOT website shows 237 people have died on Iowa roadways this year. Despite a reduction in travel in 2020, that is two more deaths than at this time last year when 235 people had died in accidents. Thus far this year, August has been Iowa's deadliest month with 51 people killed in crashes. The fewest deaths came in March when 14 people were killed.
