Paula Abdul took the stage to perform a medley of her greatest hits at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday night (May 1), but her performance did not come off without a hitch. Dancer and sometime country singer Julianne Hough ended up on the injured list after Abdul tossed her hat into the audience, striking Hough in the neck.

The 56-year-old pop star took the stage to perform a medley of her biggest hits, including “Straight Up,” “(It’s Just) The Way That You Love Me,” “Opposites Attract,” “Cold Hearted” and “Forever Your Girl.” Her high-energy performance featured the veteran singer, dancer and choreographer doing everything from tap dancing to leaping into the arms of her fellow dancers onstage, earning a standing ovation from the audience and the admiration of the evening's host, Kelly Clarkson.

At a certain point in the performance, Abdul removed her large black hat and threw it into the audience, where it struck Hough in the neck. Hough reacted in the moment by gasping and turning toward the camera, and she turned to social media afterward to share a photo of herself still in her glamorous awards show attire, but wearing a neck brace, giving the camera two thumbs up.

“The result of the honor of being hit in the neck by @PaulaAbdul’s flying hat!” she wrote, adding, “Love you, babe!!!”

Abdul replied via Twitter, writing, "OMG IM PEEING MY PANTS!!!!! You know it was with love."

The 2019 Billboard Music Awards continued without further injury, as far as we know.
