Register for 2021’s “National Night Out”

It's no secret we could all use a little human connection as the pandemic that's kept us cooped up, starts to wind down. It's also no secret that in many communities across the country, tensions between residents and police are at an all-time high. The "National Night Out" campaign aims to resolve both of those issues, and it's back this August for its 22nd year.

According to Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman via Iowa's News Now,

National Night Out is an opportunity to meet your neighbors and work collectively to prevent crime

Jerman goes on to say that "neighbors who look out for one another and report suspicious activity truly make a difference in the community. Our police officers look forward to meeting with residents and continuing to build relationships with the people we serve."

Then again, maybe your neighbors are the only people you have connected with the past year and a half. "National Night Out" still serves as a great reminder to look out for each other.

This year's event takes place on August 3. Residents in neighborhoods across Cedar Rapids are asked to lock their doors, turn on their lights, and spend time outside that evening with each other and law enforcement.  Whether it be a potluck, cookout, dessert or just hanging out, you can organize such a get-together for your neighborhood and register it as an official National Night Out event here, or call police sergeant Laura Faircloth at (319) 286-5425.
